Notes from the President:  Spring  2008

Spring 2008 already? Wow!

We just completed our annual winter meeting and clinic. It was a huge success. Over 250 coaches this year (a new record) we hope to continue to grow each year. If you attended the clinic please go the following website and let us know how we did. http://www.district196.org/Survey/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=429

Your input is so valuable to us.

This year we inducted 6 people into our Hall of Fame. They were Angie Recknor from Hopkins, Amanda Schindlecker from Menahaga, Kelly Connolly from Johnson, Lyn Peyer , Kristen Nagle from Minnetonka and long time coach Norn Setnicker from Tartan. It was a great night with a lot of wonderful stories. Please plan on attending next year it is only $10 for coaches who are members of the association.

A big thank you to John Erickson, Becky Leuer and the rest of the people at the Coaches Association for all their hard work putting together this merger that will benefit all people involved. All of our dealings have been very positive and professional. It was a wise choice to merge and we are delighted we did.

As the season starts we are changing a few awards. The individual academic awards are the same. If you have any senior athlete that has a GPA of 3.75 or greater she will be academic all state. The team academic awards have changed, if your team has a GPA of 3.75 or higher they will receive the Gold award, if they have a GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 they will receive a Silver Award and if they have a GPA of 3.25 to 3.49 they will receive the Bronze award. Go to the website www.mnhssca.org to find all of your forms and the dates and names of the people you need to send it to.

This year we will have an assistant coach of the year award for the section and the state. Each section will decide how they want to give this award and the state assistants will be given to the state champions just as the head coach one is given. Please take the time to get to know your section rep. they are the people who make our association go. You can find their name and contact information on the website.

We also are proceeding with two proposals. One is to change when we can start to work with our pitchers and catchers. We will propose to be able to work with just pitchers and catchers two weeks before the season starts. The second proposal is to have EVERY VARSITY contest played on a field between 185’ and 225’ before the year 2010. We feel this is an equity issue that is long overdue and our athletes deserve to play on a consistent playing field all year. Look for these proposals to be presented to the league by the fall of 2008.

We have also change the All Star game a bit. We are going back to Mankato and we are going back to 72 athletes. Please, if you know your athlete is NOT going to be able to participate in the all star game don’t nominate her. We may have to go to a penalty system for coaches that nominate players who do not show up for the all star games. Again please check the website for the appropriate form and dates to honor your athletes.

This is the last letter from me as president. I have had a blast and have been honored to serve you. As I think back to all of the events of the last two years I find myself ever grateful to the people who have helped make our association better each year. We have a strong group of people and it amazes me at their willingness to always do what is best for our athletes and sport.

Lastly, I would like to wish Shelly Hotzler the best of luck as your new president. I know if she has half the fun I had it will be worthwhile. I wish you all the best for 2008 and hope to see you in-between the base paths this spring. Good Luck and here’s hoping you make it to Mankato.
